About Team 8229
Balikbayan Bots is a southern Nevada Fil-Am and AAPI culture and STEM education program that centers both engineering and cultural education to provide an enriching, empowering, and competitive experience for youth in grades 8-12.
Our primary technical project is the FIRST Robotics Competition. Our mission is to build technical skills, inspire innovation, and instill a sense of community pride and responsibility, all while honoring the spirit of "Balikbayan"—the tradition of returning home to give back and uplift our communities.
We aim to inspire students through comprehensive STEM education and cultural enrichment, preparing them to become impactful leaders.
We invite partners and supporters to join us in this vital mission of empowerment, innovation, and community development.
Students train in one of five subteams - Design, Fabrication, Assembly, Programming, Business & Media (BaM).
Team 8229 operates out of UNLV's main campus in Las Vegas, NV. Students in grades 8 -12 or ages 13-18 can apply to join the team. We welcome all backgrounds to apply.
Though the students specialize in a technical area, all students have opportunities to volunteer in the community.
The team meets year-round. The general schedule is as follows:
Offseason May - January
The offseason is our training period for new and veteran students. This time of year is when most of our volunteering and community outreach events occur.
Build Season January - February
The new design challenge for FRC is released early January and then the team sprints to prototype, design, build, and program the robot.
Competition Season March - April
Team 8229 will compete at 2 Regionals events minimum and the World Championship(if qualified). The local Regional event is located at the Thomas and Mack Center at UNLV. The travel regional will vary from year to year and is selected in the Fall Offseason. The closest travel Regionals are in California, Arizona, Utah, and Idaho.
